I came from Huntsville a little over 6 years ago. For whatever reason you come to Nashville or think about perusing Nashville I hope I can give you some insight on what I think can help you. Songwriting is not for everybody and everyone's goals are different. Make sure you have a passion and a thirst you have to quench. If you don't know who wrote "2 Sparrows In A Hurricane" or "Song Remembers When" or " I Swear" you might not be a student of the trade. But whatever brings you to Nashville and "YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN". Here is my 2 cents.
Don't come to Nashville and start going to all the writers' nights and signing in for the open night and such. My definition of open mike nights is, "after everyone else is gone and you want to sing to yourself at 11-2 in the morning and go home tired and your next day is shot and you ain't sharp night." Be a fly on the wall for a few weeks and go to every writer's night you can. Find the best ones at the Bluebird and go listen to the great ones. But the first step if you think you are serious about becoming a writer make sure you want to know the truth.

Do some things before you make that move away from family until you are sure you have "The Stuff". If you don't have a clue but have an idea that you think you can and want to write go to the NSAI website and sign up and work it out to go to song camp 101. Then if you still think you want to come go to song camp 301. Meet a lot of great people and folks with the same dream as you and start co-writing even if it is over the Internet.

I spent 3 years in Nashville. Now I have moved back to Huntsville. I own a publishing company and have a full time song plugger. We are constantly looking for songs and doing single song publishing deals. Please submit songs to mccarthypublishing@gmail.com  for consideration.
